On hearing the cries, local residents rushed to the bus and rescued the girl before catching the culprits and handing them over to the police. After inquiries with the trio, a fourth person, who had been raping the girl on multiple occasions, was also arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that the girl from a village near Omalur in Salem was a Class 9 dropout.

Her father was a mason while her mother was a daily wage labourer. Three years ago she had befriended Ramu (name changed), conductor of a private bus, who was from a village near Veeranam in Salem. “He had sexually assaulted the girl on multiple occasions and recently introduced her to his friend K Ramesh (name changed) (22) of Sanyasikundu in Salem, a bus driver. She began to get close with Perumal.

The girl was in the bus after the last trip for the day. As there was no one in the bus, Perumal and two drivers, Rajesh (name changed) (31) of Sanyasikundu in Salem, and Mahesh (name changed) (35) of Athikaripatti in Salem, took turns to rape her,” a senior police officer said. Unable to take it anymore, the girl cried out in pain. Hearing her wails, villagers rushed to the bus and rescued her. They handed over the trio to the Omalur police station.

The girl was sent to a government home, from where she was taken to a hospital for treatment. She will be given counselling as she has been traumatised by the turn of events. The police officer said that the incident took place with the consensus of the girl, but it would be treated as rape as the girl is less than 18-years-old.

On Tuesday, Ramu was also arrested. The members of a women’s organisation staged a demonstration in front of the police station demanding stringent action against the rapists.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Salem District P Rajan said that the accused have been booked under Sections 366A (procuration of minor girl), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 376D (gang rape) and 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 5 (g) (whoever commits gang penetrative sexual assault on a child) and 6 (punishment for committing aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

“The girl is a Dalit and two of the rapists belong to a intermediate caste due to which they were booked under three sections of The Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) Prevention of Atrocities Act. The two others rapists belong to the SC and ST communities respectively,” the SP said. He added that the girl would be given a compensation of Rs 4.12 lakh as the case has also been booked under this Act.
