It is said that D Mukesh (17) of Govindarajapuram and two of his friends, Nazeer and Kasi, were picked up by the Manapparai police in connection with a theft case on May 24 by inspector Sivakumar and three other police personnel. During interrogation, the police had assaulted the trio badly. Unable to bear the physical assault, Mukesh is said to have fallen down unconscious. Police personnel immediately rushed him to a private hospital in Manapparai and as his condition deteriorated, Mukesh was shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial GH, Tiruchy, where he was put on a ventilator. However, on Tuesday, Mukesh succumbed.Â
Once the information of Mukesh’s death spread across Manapparai, cadre belonging to various political parties gathered at his house and took out a procession to Manapparai police station and staged a protest.Â
Meanwhile, the police convinced the parents of Mukesh and cremated the youth’s body at Sevelur. Protesters, who blocked traffic at the Manapprai Four-road junction, dispersed after ADSP Natarajan held talks with them.
