    TNSRLM transforms lives of over 8,000 people in Madurai

    The Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission (TNSRLM) is transforming the lives of rural people in many ways. Under the scheme, 8,449 people were employed in Madurai district in the last four years said officials of Madurai district administration.

    Officials said that TNSRLM had been implemented in nine unions in Madurai district. In 2013-14, it was implemented in Madurai East, Melur, Kottampatti and Tiruparankundram and in 2014-15, the scheme had been extended to five more unions of Madurai West, Alanganallur, Usilampatti, Sellampatti and Tirumangalam.

    Under the scheme, beneficial works such as formation of new women self-help groups, employment camps, vocational training for youngsters and women who are head of the family and Rs.1 lakh for self-help groups, formation of poverty alleviation unions and so on have been implemented.

    So far, 17 employment camps had been conducted in the past five years. The number of persons employed was 323 in  2013-14, 1,244 in 2014-15, 3,018 in 2015-16, and 3,864 in 2016-17. In total, over 8, 000 persons were employed in the last four years. 

    As many as 3,719 new women self-help groups were formed since 2011. From 2011 to 2014, 2,617 self- help groups; 200 in 2014-15, 464 in 2015-16 and 438 in 2016-17 were formed. In the same period, 151 women self- help groups were given Rs 98.15 lakhs as funds. 

    In the last four years, 1,525 youngsters were given vocational training using Rs 50.95 lakh. Similarly, 903 women were given vocational and industrial training at the cost of Rs 31.9 lakh. 

    Madurai Collector, K Veera Raghav Rao, said that the scheme had proved beneficial to people living in villages especially women who were given special fund and training under various schemes. Employment is also guaranteed under the scheme and 100 percent bank loan is issued to the women, said the Collector.
