Villagers break liquor bottles in Kovilpatti
Angry residents of Puliankulam village near Kovilpatti damaged liquor bottles unloaded by the TASMAC workers and forced them to move the remaining consignment from the proposed outlet on Saturday midnight.
Madurai
After the Supreme Court’s order on removal of liquor shops from the National and state highways, officials had decided to shift them to the residential areas. Similarly, at Kovilpatti, the officials had planned to open a liquor outlet in one of the government constructed houses at the Dalit colony in Puliankulam. However, the residents of the colony opposed the decision and protested it. They submitted petitions to the officials and obtained an assurance that the shop would not come up in their locality.Â
Meanwhile, on Saturday, TASMAC workers without the knowledge of the residents unloaded liquor bottles at the house. Some alert residents, who got wind of the move, gathered the people in front of the house and surrounded the vehicle.Â
Angered by the TASMAC workers act of unloading liquor bottles, the residents started breaking the consignment shouting slogans against the officials. As tension escalated, the workers re-loaded the remaining bottles back into the vehicle and drove away.
