TASMAC outlet ransacked near Pollachi

Following the Supreme Court direction to close down liquor outlets and bars located within at a distance of 500 m from National and State Highways, an outlet at Chellappampalayam village near Pollachi was closed on April 1. It was then decided to be relocated to Thippampatti, which is l less than a kilometre from Pollachi to Udumalpet Main Road. But the villagers protested, stating that the area is accident-prone. 

Around 11.30 am women broke open the shop, and threw out liquor bottles. Gomangalam police rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers. 

People in villages near Rameswaram protested against setting up a liquor shop at Sambai village near Rameswaram, on Saturday. On Saturday, residents of Sambai village along with two other neighbouring villages such as Mangadu and Vadakadu, staged a protest in front of the new building where the officials had proposed to open the liquor shop. 

They damaged the steel barricades before the shop and barged into it. They also staged a road roko. Rameswaram tahsildhar Ganesan reached the spot and held talks with the agitators. He assured them that the shop would not be opened. The protest was then withdrawn.
