June 3 will be D-Day for Stalin

June 3 will be a ‘D’ day for DMK working president MK Stalin when the leaders of the “secular front” converge here, which they are expected to do. Stalin would be donning the role of his father Karunanidhi, who worked for a secular front.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi laid bare his plans when she invited the likes of Sonia Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad on Stalin’s behalf.

Though grapevine has it that Karunanidhi may share dais with the leaders, even DMK insiders admit that it would augur well for Stalin to lead the confluence himself as he would break the shackles and step out of his father’s shades. “In hosting the national leaders, Stalin would win na-tional acceptance,” said a functionary close to the DMK leadership.

Also, it would project DMK as being totally anti-BJP. The Dravidian major, which ended its reluctant criticism of the BJP and started going all guns blazing against the saffron party since last month, would draw the battle lines for not only 2019 but also for the ensuing local body polls in Tamil Nadu.

“Naturally, when unanimity is reached on the issue of fielding a common candidate for the Presidential election, the partnership would extend to larger issues,” said a DMK functionary. For instance, the two Left parties and VCK, which had joined them to fight for farmers, would find a com-mon ground with the DMK, which could translate in to electoral partner-ship against the ruling AIADMK.

However, the meeting and its outcome would be decided only based on the 2G case verdict, which, sources suggest, could be out in the third week of May.
