It is the only city from Tamil Nadu to figure in the top ten cities (with a population of over 10 lakh) in the country, scoring 1715.84 marks out of the total 2000. Last year, it was ranked as the third best.

Tiruchy generates 450 tonnes of garbage every day from 1,273 garbage collection bins. Out of this, 20 tonnes of garbage is being made into compost through micro compost yards in the city. An additional 16 micro compost yards are in the process of construction to decentralise waste collection. Also, on-site compost yard facilities are established in hotels, educational institutes etc,.

Reacting to the news, City Commissioner N Ravichandran who received the award from Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, told DTNext that the competition was more intense this year. “In 2016, only 73 cities vied for the position but this year, the fight was tough and we had  to compete with 434 cities. This is of course a remarkable achievement”, Ravichandran further said.

However, activists are cautious in their celebration. KC Neelamegam, Secretary, Thanneer Organisatation a pro-environment movement said, “We are happy about the cleanest city tag in South India but this shows how bad the other cities are. Now, the civic body as well as the residents should work for pushing the city in the first place next year.”  However, a section of social activists said that the news about the cleanest city tag has come as a surprise to them. “Tiruchy has got a long way to go to be graded as a clean city. Perhaps in comparison with other dirty cities, Tiruchy may have scored. Let this not lull us into complacence”, N Ramakrishnan, MGR Nalpani Mandram said.
