CHANGE India, a Centre for Advocacy and Research, has come up with a booklet that has various aspects of the Supreme Court Judgment on National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS and Dental graduate courses in India and their implications for Tamil Nadu.
Chennai
Speaking at the launch, prof M Anandakrishnan, former VC, Anna University and Chairperson, Board of Governors, IITK, said, “NEET gives an opportunity to correct the present-day school education system. Students need not memorise the syllabus but can learn fundamental science. It will help stop the menace of capitation fees. Colleges charge anywhere between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1 crore as capitation fees. This system will put an end to that.”
There are many doubts about NEET and there is an opinion that it is meant only for the urban elites, a press meet was arranged on Wednesday. Addressing the audience, former VC said, “It is untrue that the state board syllabus is not on par with CBSE. It is just the way the exams are being conducted. Also, all students from Tamil Nadu will be designated in the state. Except for reservation of seats in Government Medical Colleges under 15 per cent All India quota that makes students eligible to join in medical colleges across India except Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir, all the other quotas remain the same.”
Explaining further about the advantage of NEET, A Narayanan, founder of CHANGE India explained, “The Supreme Court has ordered that the state governments must admit students in private medical colleges, including minority colleges and deemed universities through a single window systems.”
The other speakers present at the event were Prof Dr S Arulraj, Chairperson, Commonwealth Medical Association Trust, who also reiterated that NEET is ideal for students in the longer run.
