With the city already reeling from sweltering heat and water crisis, the coming weeks could be even more difficult. The city has been witnessing temperatures fluctuating between 39 and 42 degree Celsius in April.

However, weather bloggers say that though dog days will show its fury, there is a high chance for rains as well. They also said that the average temperature might rise above 40 degree Celsius.

Speaking to DTNext, S Balachandran, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, said, “Usually, dog days are the hottest period of the year. However, this time, there is a possibility that there could be rains in May. The high temperature in the land would pave the way for absorbing of a large amount of water from the sea resulting in rains.”

K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger, said, “Due to Cyclone Mala, the last days of April witnessed temperatures above 42 degree Celsius. The cyclone has moved towards Myanmar now. During the dog days, the westerly winds will cause temperature to shoot up even further. There would be a north-west trough, when westerly and easterly winds meet and this could result in rains.”
