The petitioner, SVS Kumar from Tiruvarur, claimed that the minister demanded Rs 30 lakh as part of his campaign expenses for the Nannilam constituency Assembly elections in 2011. In exchange for the money, Kamaraj promised to evict a person who had illegally occupied a property owned by Kumar in Chennai.

The petitioner claimed that the former owner of the property he purchased at Mylapore refused to vacate the premises even several months after he had closed the deal.

Kumar later approached the minister to help him take possession of the land. In exchange for his assistance, the minister asked Kumar to deposit the money. Kumar alleged that he also paid Kamaraj’s cousin Ramakrishnan an additional Rs 15 lakh.

However, once Kamaraj was elected as the MLA, he cut all ties with the realtor. Kumar tried in vain to recover the money he had given Kamaraj and his kin.

Kumar filed a complaint with the Mannargudi police station against Kamaraj and Ramakrishnan on March 10, 2015. In April 2015, the Madras High Court directed the police to inquire into the complaint.
