Names short-listed for Vice Chancellors posts sent to Governor

With several university vice chancellor posts lying vacant in the state, top education department officials have confirmed that the search committees of Anna University, Madras University and Madurai Kamaraj University have zeroed in on the recommendations for the post of Vice Chancellors and though the decision remains with the Chancellor and the TN Governor.

While Anna University and Madras University have been functioning without a Vice Chancellor since 2016, it’s been close to two years Madurai Kamaraj University has not had a VC. “The search panels for all the three Universities have sought an appointment with the Governor, who is yet to make any decision,” said a senior official in the Higher Education Department.

Higher education department officials are extra cautious about the credentials of VC candidates following the inquiry initiated against A. Ganapathi, former VC of Bharathiar University, the official said.

This is after a preliminary investigation was conducted by Higher education department. Each university suggests three names suitable for the post. Once the names reach the chancellor, the decision is made within days,” he said. The department also claimed that they had even suggested on conducting the convocation for the students of Anna University carrying the signature of the representative from the search committee but the of Anna University Teachers Association (AUTA) objected to that.

“Only those students wanting to go abroad need the degree. That is not even one per cent of the students who will be affected. We want a proper selection process,” said Arul Aram, president of AUTA, further adding, “This delay is also affecting the promotion of teachers. Teachers here haven’t got any promotion in seven years.”

Meanwhile, Raj Bhavan sources claimed that the delay on the part of the Governor could be due to the same reason i.e. to choose the right candidate with no blemish. “The Governor wants to leave no stone unturned in selecting the right candidate,” sources said.
