    Among a few railway zones which spend more than they earn, Southern Railway has recorded a spurt in its overall expenditure by 8.7% in the last fiscal.

    Admitting to his zone suffering a hike in operating ratio, general manager of Southern Railway, Vashishta Johri, said the zone had carried 798 million originating passengers in 2016-17 fiscal, which was 3.8 more than the corresponding year, and earned Rs 4,673 crore revenue. 

    Claiming that the zone had netted an overall revenue of Rs.7950 crore in 2016-17, almost the same in 2015-16, Johri conceded that the overall expenditure had increased by 8.7% over 2015-16 to Rs. 1,11,50 crore, which had triggered a spurt in operating expenditure to 146.9 from 134.9 last year.

    MILESTONES ON TRACK 

    • 94 kms of doubling in Villupuram- Dindigul project.
    • 30.12 kms of doubling in Ernakulam-Kottayam-Kayankulam project.
    • 2.2 km of 5th and 6th line between MMC and BBQ, 7 kms of 4th line between Ennore and Atttipattu, have been completed.
    • 40 km of gauge conversion between Pollachi and Podanur.
