Five chitals (spotted deer) were run over by speeding vehicles on the Cochin to Chennai National Highway at Thekkalur village near Avinashi in Tirupur district in the wee hours of Thursday. Four of them were females. Three were aged about two years while the two other were about one and a half years old, respectively.
Forest Range Officer S Mahesh told DTNext that the incident took place around 3 am. Sub-inspector Ravi and a constable witnessed the incident during night patrol. The ranger said that there is a sizeable population of deer in that area and that they used to cross the dry river (Kousika River) below the bridge regularly. On Thursday, they crossed the road bridge on the highway as they were being chased by a pack of stray dogs.
“A pack of 10 dogs was chasing around 10 to 12 deer. While a few managed to escape, the rest were run over by speeding vehicles on either side of the highway (Chennai to Coimbatore road and vice versa). Two died on the spot. The cops, with the help of forest staff, took the injured deer to Avinashi Police Station for safety,” Mahesh said.
