It is said, Mahendiran (49), a daily wage labour, and Rangaraju (53), a coffee vendor of Periyamilaguparai, had been waiting for their turn to collect potable water from a public tank.

It is alleged that Mahendiran had collected an additional pot of water with people waiting behind him in a serpentine queue. This resulted in a verbal quarrel that later snowballed into a violent attack.

When Rangaraju bit Mahendiran’s ear lobe, onlookers intervened and the police detained the accused. Sources said that Mahendiran had completely lost his left ear lobe which could not be traced even after a search by the neighbours.
