Recently, a number of highways contractors staged a demonstration against the intervention of the minister in the tenders. Vijaya Baskar’s father R Chinnathambi, who was once an AIADMK union chairman has been a PWD and State Highways contractor for the last 20 years, but made no profit. However, it is alleged his fortunes changed after Vijaya Baskar became a minister.

Subsequently, Vijaya  Baskar was allegedly directly involved in securing tenders for his father. And the AIADMK functionaries claimed that Chinnathambi earned contracts worth over Rs 1,000 crore in the last five years. He was involved in major road and small bridges contracts in Pudukkottai. Since the other contractors could not get any contract for the past several years, the association staged an agitation in February and even lodged a complaint, but no action was initiated.
