The victim R Raman of Kannampalayam in Ganapathy worked as a watchman in a private cable firm in Uppilipalayam.

Since Raman was the only watchman of the company and worked roundthe-clock he was provided a room on the same premises itself. His son used to bring food for him every day.

On Saturday morning passers-by and locals found the watchman lying dead on the road with a bloodstained stone near him.

Police said that he was last seen by a few people, consuming alcohol with his friend Chandran, an ex-convict and a pocket picker, near the company. The duo used to consume liquor often at the same place.

When cops checked the CCTV footage of a commercial establishment located nearby, they found out that the duo had first had an argument and then clashed with each other in an inebriated condition during which the ex-convict murdered Raman by throwing a stone on the latter’s head.

A team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police S Lakshmi, inspected the scene of crime and conducted a preliminary inquiry.

Race Course Police have registered a case under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code and is on the lookout for the accused.

Raman’s body was later sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. Raman is survived by wife R Renuka (48) and son Barathan (30).
