With no clear word from government, farmers firm on stir
Representatives of Tamil Nadu farmers protesting at Jantar Mantar announced that they will continue their protest after a meeting with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proved to be inconclusive on Tuesday.
New Delhi
The delegation met Jaitley and Union minister Uma Bharti to put forth their demands. The farmers have been staging a protest in the national capital demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre for Tamil Nadu, farm loan waiver, setting up of the Cauvery Management Board and the unification of rivers among others.
Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker and AIADMK leader M Thambidurai was present in the farmers’ meeting with Jaitley.
On the eighth day of the protest, the farmers said they would continue their dharna till they meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union ministers for Agriculture and Water Resources. “We will not call off the protest till we meet the PM and the Agriculture and Water Resources ministers,” said a representative of the farmers.
