The woman was identified as Karthigadevi of Karuppatti village in Madurai district.

According to sources, Karthigadevi was waiting with a petition at the collectorate near the sub-treasury office located close to the main entrance. She suddenly took out a blade from her bag and slit her wrist. In the first two slits, Karthigadevi did not suffer any injury. But, in her third attempt the woman started bleeding and on seeing the blood she lost fainted.

People who were sitting next to her raised an alarm and journalists, who were present at the collectorate, rushed her to the GH. Her belongings and petition were taken away by the police.

After treatment, doctors confirmed that she was out of danger.

Later talking to media persons, she said that while studying in a polytechnic college she developed a relationship with Rahul her collegemate.

After she completed her studies, Karthigadevi’s parents arranged a marriage for her. At this juncture, when the girl told about her relationship with Rahul, her parents opposed it. Hence, Rahul and Karthigadevi eloped from their house and got married on February 25 this year. After marriage, Rahul had gone to work at Chennai and she stayed back at Madurai.

Meanwhile, three relatives (uncles) of Rahul, who were working in the police department, had threatened her to leave Rahul and return to her village. She had been refusing and all her efforts to contact Rahul went in vain as his mobile phone was switched off. There was also no information about his whereabouts.

Hence, she was depressed and reportedly resorted to the extreme step at the Collectorate on Tuesday.
