The victim has been identified as Farook (31), a daily wage labourer residing in Ukkadam south housing unit. He is survived by wife and two children. A senior police officer in Coimbatore city said that Farook was an active member of the DVK and his views on religion evoked strong opposition from members of his own community. He recently uploaded pictures and messages of his atheist ideology on his Facebook page.Â
Police suspect that that could have been the reason for his murder. On Thursday, Farook after receiving a phone call, went out on to the Ukkadam water treatment plant. There, a gang of four chased and hacked him to death. He was stabbed on his stomach and neck multiple times. Â
Farook collapsed on the spot. Local people who heard strange noises, came out and tried to catch the accused, but the assailants managed to escape from the spot in their vehicles, police said. On Friday, tension gripped CMCH where Farook’s body was kept for post-mortem.Â
Hundreds of cadre attached to DVK, Dravidar Kazhagam and Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam thronged the hospital and demanded immediate arrest of the murderers. Later in the day, M Ansardh (31), a resident of Podanur, surrendered at the magistrate court claiming that the police were on the lookout for him in Farook’s murder case. Three other assailants are on the run, police said.
