Yukiya Amano was visiting the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) where construction of units III and IV are going on. He interacted with the officials, who explained to him about the safety measures put in place at KKNPP.
Following his interaction with the officials, Yukiya Amano met the media and said that his visit to KKNPP was not to inspect the facilities and safety measures but to know the public opinion, which had changed after the Fukushima incident in 2011 besides learning about the new projects.
Yukiya Amano said there was no need to worry as the safety measures had been enhanced in all the nuclear reactors across the world following the Fukushima incident. He also claimed that at present, as many as 449 reactors were functioning across the world and 60 more were under construction. Most of the upcoming nuclear reactors are in the developing countries of Asia such as India, China and South Korea.
The Nuclear energy sector is growing at a brisk pace and is set to witness 56 per cent growth by 2030. As India is a growing country, it needs more of Nuclear energy. It is a clean and safe energy resource claimed Yukiya Amano.
