    Rs 2,287 crore allocated for rail projects in TN, says Minister

    Inaugurating a slew of railway projects across the Tiruchy Division, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that Rs 2,287 crores has been allocated for the development works in the state in the current budget.

    He added that the average allocation in the past decade was only about Rs 870 crores. 

    On Saturday, the Minister dedicated a new by-pass line of 2.13 km connecting the main line and chord line at Ponmalai to the nation. This vital link was expected to save engine turnaround time at Ponmalai, as well as providing freight trains a line to bypass Ponmalai station.   

    He also announced the extension of train numbers 22627/22628 Tiruchi – Tirunelveli Intercity Express to Thiruvananthapuram which has been a long-pending demand of the people on the stretch for better rail connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. 

    Apart from these, the Minister dedicated doubling with electrification of the 16-km section between Villupuram and Tiruvennainallur Road railway stations via video conferencing from Tiruchy. He also inaugurated a spacious waiting hall and VIP lounge at Vriddhachalam station. 

    Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, state ministers Vellamandi N Natarajan, S Valarmathi, C Ve Shanmugam, MC Sampath and DMK MP Tiruchy N Siva were  present.
