Collector says Rs 10 coin valid after beggars too reject it in Kovai

Rumours of Rs 10 coin are fake and that they have been demonetised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has done enough damage in the city here, as they are not being accepted as a legal tender in many places.

Coimbatore collector TN Hariharan on Thursday issued a press release warning action against those not accepting the coins.

The press release stated that several complaints were submitted in this regard to the collector. “The situation is so bad that the coins were not accepted by shops and even by Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation crew. More worse is that even beggars reject the coins.”

Coimbatore District Lead Bank Manager A Kanagaraj told DTNext that the coins were circulated by banks during demonetisation to reduce the stress.

“Panicked by the rumour that these coins have been banned, traders are trying to return them to banks in bulk. But, the change is for the convenience of traders and the public, there is no need to deposit them in banks,” he said.

While bankers claimed that some staff would not have accepted coins due to operational constraints amidst their hectic schedule in the post demonetisation period, Kanagaraj said that banks have been instructed to accept the coins.

“Action will be taken against the banks or the staff if anyone lodges complaint,” he added.
