The books included a slew of titles on various topics including Tamil literature, politics,  Mao, and Che Guevara. Overlooking Stalin’s advise to keep his birthday celebration a low-key affair, party cadre burst in to celebration.

From distributing free food to displaying posters and even donating an occasion cattle, Stalin’s loyalists did everything to make their political rivals envious. One Zahir Shah of Tiruvannamalai unit of DMK even gifted a jallikattu-fame Kangeyam bull to the DMK working president at Anna Arivalayam. The same person had reportedly brought a horse last year.

That apart, a good number of cadre even brought the usual shawls and dhotis for the ‘commander’ of the DMK. The party also released a photograph of Karunanidhi, first since Stalin was appointed party working president, seen greeting his son on the latter’s 65th birthday. Apart from politicians, actor Rajinikanth was learnt to have called and greeted Stalin over the phone.
