Ending months of suspense, late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar announced her entry into Tamil Nadu politics by floating her own political outfit, the “MGR Amma Deepa (MAD) Peravai on Friday. She also announced her decision to contest the RK Nagar bypolls.

Announcing this at a crowded media conference at her residence, she also unveiled the outfit’s flag which had a portrait of MGR handing a sceptre to Jayalalithaa inside a white circle at the centre of the flag’s Red and Black colours.
“I will be the treasurer of the Peravai,” she said. But, Deepa did not disclose who the other office bearers of the Peravai would be. Stating that her outfit was a movement and not a political party, Deepa said her primary aim would be to retrieve the AIADMK’s two leaves symbol and to ensure Jayalalithaa rule in Tamil Nadu.
Deepa later announced that she would contest the bypolls at Chennai’s RK Nagar constituency that was rendered vacant following the sudden demise of Jayalalithaa and that her peravai would also contest the ensuing local body elections, she added.
“My first political tour would start from RK Nagar,” she said. Stating that her aim in entering politics was to work for the people, she said she would concentrate on the welfare of women and farmers.
Asked about her recent statement at Jayalalithaa’s memorial on the Marina, where she met O Panneerselvam and claimed that both would be like two hands to serve the people, she said the visit was only a courtesy call.
Asked about her brother Deepak’s recent statement supporting OPS, she said she suspected a political conspiracy behind his statements as till recently he had been supporting VK Sasikala but now was talking against TTV Dhinakaran who had been nominated by her.
Referring to Deepak’s negative statements about her, she said that he seemed to be confused. Asked about her being estranged from her aunt Jayalalithaa she said she had always visited her aunt on her birthday.
