The workers, including women and children, demanded issuance of a gun for inter-caste couple when they sign their marriage papers at the registrar’s office to protect them for their parents and other outfits.
The organisation’s youth wing leader Silambarasan who led the protest said that there are many incidents where either of the couple or both of them were killed for marrying out of their caste.
“Suspicious death of Ilavarasan in Dharmapuri and the murder of Dalit youth Gokulraj (Tiruchengode in Namakkal district) and Shankar (Udumalpet in Tirupur district) are recent proofs for such violence unleashed on innocent inter-caste marriage couples,” he said.
Terming inter-caste marriages as a means for a caste free society, the protesters also made an appeal to the government to encourage such marriages by coming out with a separate bill to protect such couples. The Kalaput Thirumanam Purinthor Nala Sangam (inter-caste marriage welfare association) of Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) celebrated Valentine’s Day by making such inter-caste marriage couples to cut a big cake near the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand in Coimbatore, on Tuesday.
