RDO gives karuvelam tree clearing punishment to sand smugglers
In an unusual incident, revenue officials who seized four bullock carts for illegally transporting sand, asked the riders to remove seemai karuvelam (acacia) trees from certain areas instead of levying a fine as punishment for the violation.

According to sources, during an inspection on Friday, Revenue Divisional Officer C Suresh caught four bullock carts that were on their way to quarry sand from Vennaru river on the outskirts of Thanjavur. Suresh stopped the bullock carts and the riders were identified as Mahalingam of Sunganthidal, Mahendran of Kaadukaval, Govindaraj of Keeraikara street and Murugesan of Kodikalur. All four were sent to the Thanjavur Taluk office along with the seized bullock carts.
The RDO then ordered them to remove seemai karuvelam trees on one-acre land on alongside Sunkan Thidal Road, instead levying fine on the four violators. The RDO assured to return the bullock carts once the trees were removed. All the four accepted the punishment and assured to remove the trees from Sunday.
