Kerala permits Corporation to pump Siruvani water
In a big relief to Coimbatore and its neighbouring areas, the Kerala government has agreed to allow the permitted the Corporation to draw water for drinking purposes from the Siruvani. The Kerala government gave its nod after several rounds of talks by the PWD and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board officials with their counterparts of that state.

The permission was on as barter system wherein Kerala would allow the Corporation to draw 30 million litres a day (mld) from below storage level in the Siruvani. In return, Tamil Nadu should provide 225 cusecs more to Kerala from Aliyar dam till February 15.
The state was so far giving only 100 cusecs to the neighbouring state as per an earlier agreement. Sources in the TWAD Board said that Kerala gave the official confirmation to draw water from the below storage level in Siruvani Dam on Sunday.
Installation of heavy diesel motor pumps and generators to pump water from Siruvani had already begun. Due to rainfall deficit, the Siruvani dam had reached dead storage by the second week of January itself and this led to severe water shortage in the Textile City.
Corporation and TWAD Board officials were forced to look for alternative methods to ensure minimum supply to the city. Unable to supply water through pipelines, the corporation used dozens of water tankers to cater to various parts of the city.
“Now, the barter deal is expected to ease the crisis to a large extent for the next three months. With 30 mld from Siruvani dam, the requirements of a few wards in Coimbatore city, seven Town Panchayats and around 10 villages in the district can be met,” said a senior TWAD Board official.
The permission has come at a time when the heat was building up over Kerala’s proposal to construct a series of check dams across Bhavani River.
