Six others get to walk free from the 25-year case for want evidence to corroborate their involvement.

The division bench comprising Justice S Nagamuthu and N Authinathan confirmed the order of the Sessions Judge for Exclusive Trial of Bomb Blast cases at Poonamallee awarding life term in respect of three accused - Elavarasan, Amulraj and Kumar, based on the evidence of one of the accused  Elangomani, who turned approver. However, the bench acquitted six others after holding that the evidence of Elangomani failed to corroborate with other prosecution witness, which is a mandatory requirement under the Indian Evidence Act especially with the case being built on circumstantial evidence.

As per the prosecution, the accused, who wanted to liberate Tamil Nadu from India, conspired to steal guns and ammunition from the Puthur police station to equip themselves. In the intervening night of April 7, 1991, they barged into the police station and attacked the cops manning it resulting in one cop getting killed on the spot and three others, including an SI, sustaining serious injuries.
