SEC seeks more time to unveil local body election schedule

Even as the State government has indicated that elections to the local bodies in Tamil Nadu could be held only after April due to the forthcoming SSLC and Plus Two examinations, the State Election Commission (SEC) has sought the Madras High Court for more time to come out clear on the election schedule.

The division bench comprising Justice Nooty Ramamohana Rao and Justice S M Subramaniam, which had refused to accept SEC’s earlier submission that local body elections could be held only in April had sought its counsel to get instructions from the Commission after posting the case to January 31 for further hearing.

But when the case came up for hearing on Wednesday, SEC’s counsel B Kumar sought for more time to take up the issue as he was tied down with a wedding in the family. The bench on remarking that if it was for his son’s wedding, two weeks could be granted or else it can be just a week, posted the case to February 10.

However, when senior counsel P Wilson appearing for the DMK insisted that SEC’s counsel should come with the election schedule as and when the case resumes, the bench observed that “We don’t need to tell such senior counsels on what should be done.”
