Alanganallur vadivasal shut for Jallikattu
Despite the state government giving a nod for conducting jallikattu protesters of Alanganallur remained rooted to their demand of a permanent law for it and protested in front of the vadivasal. As a result, the vadivasal remained closed and the jallikattu which was planned by the state government could not be conducted.
Madurai
The State government had passed an ordinance for jallikattu and given a nod for conducting the valour sport. However, protesters at Alanganallur and other parts of the state demanded the government to take a permanent step either in the form of a law or an ordinance to conduct the valour sport every year. When the district administration announced that all the safety arrangements would be made at the vadivasal, a large number of people assembled in before the vadivasal area and prevented the preparatory work. They asked the people who were working to stop immediately.Â
The Bull Tamers Association and Bull Growers Association too supported the protest and informed that they will not participate at the jallikattu. Â In the meantime, all the roads leading to Alanganallur were blocked. Even officials were not allowed to enter Alanganallur village and the Madurai Collector, K Veera Raghav Rao, and SP, Vijayendra Bidari and a large number of protesters assembled in front of the Vadivasal.Â
Black flags were hoisted near the Vadivasal and people opposed jallikattu. In the noon, when people heard the news of Chief Minister, O Panneerselvam, returning to Chennai there was a loud roar and they announced that Alanganallur is the first place in the history of Tamil Nadu not to allow a Chief Minister inside. After the incident, crowds began swelling at Alanganallur and claimed that they will protest till a permanent law is made. Even children raised slogans for a permanent law.Â
However, in the afternoon all the police force was withdrawn and barricades placed in front of vadivasal were removed. People moved to vadivasal and continued their protest. All the roads leading to Alanganallur were blocked. Boulders were placed in the roads and only bikes were allowed.Â
In the roads from Oomachikulam and Sikkendar Chavadi lorries laden with Sugarcane were made to stand in a manner so as to block the entry of all the vehicles. In the road leading to Alanganallur from Tanichiyam people blocked the road by placing trees and thorny bushes in the middle of the road. Wanting to hold talks with the protesters the Collector had proceeded from Madurai in his car but could not cross Tanichiyam.Â
Hence he travelled as a pillion rider in a 2-wheeler. He managed to reach Pudhupatti village, which is just two km away from Alanganallur, in the bike but people of Pudhupatti stopped him. Though he tried to convince them he could not and returned back in the same bike.
