12-hour bandh peaceful in Pondy, Karaikal
The 12-hour bandh called by the ‘Poralikal Iyyakkam’, a federation of more than 30 Tamil organisations demanding the lifting of ban on ‘jallikattu’ (taming of bulls) and banning PETA passed off peacefully in the Union Territory today.

No incidents of violence was reported while the Porlikal Iyyakkam volunteers resorted to a rail roko as part of the bandh. Volunteers stopped the Puducherry-Tirupathi express train for some time and dispersed. The bandh was near total with only the government offices functioning with little attendance. Shops and other business establishments remained closed, all modes of transport remained off the road, disrupting normal life. A large number of students and youths thronged the AFT grounds on the Cudddalore road where the students are on agitation for the last four days while they resorted to peaceful agitations at different places.
Students also burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi near the new bus stand. Students and youths also took out procession along with bulls, while a few others picketed the Raj Nivas and shouted slogans in support of the bull fight. Police pacified them. Photo and video studio owners association, motor mechanic association and traders took out separate processions and joined the students in the agitation at the AFT grounds. Meanwhile, about thirty students and their parents observed a fast near the Singaravelar statue in support of jallikattu.
