Deepa disappoints loyalists; defers decision to Jayalalaithaa’s birthday
Deepa Jayakumar, niece of the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who was expected to announce her decision on joining politics on the birth centenary of AIADMK founder MGR, said that she would announce her foray into politics on February 24 – Jayalalithaa’s birthday after getting to know the views of party cadre and the public.
Chennai
“I will tour Tamil Nadu soon to elicit the views of the people and will announce my decision after getting the opinion of people,” she said. During a press interaction at her residence, Deepa paid tributes to MGR and Jayalalithaa before stating that though she was a woman with a family and responsibilities, she was forced to enter public life due to the demand of party cadre and well-wishers.
“I want to serve the people on the lines adopted by MGR and Jayalalithaa and I am confident that I can work for the welfare of Tamilians and Tamil Nadu,” she said. Deepa clarified that she could either join the AIADMK or start a new party or explore other avenues.
Asked about Sasikala’s husband M Natarajan’s recent comment that it was his family that safeguarded Jayalalithaa during her tenure as Chief Minister, Deepa said, “Jayalalithaa was fully capable of thinking for herself and taking decisions. She had no need to rely on anybody.”
On her lack of experience in Tamil Nadu’s rough and tumble politics, she said, “I have full faith in democracy. Anybody can enter politics and no experience is needed to serve the people. Experience as a certificate is not necessary.”
Earlier on January 17 morning, Deepa, who was accompanied by thousands of supporters including several women, went to the MGR House in T Nagar and later to the MGR Memorial at the Marina beach to pay respects to the AIADMK founder.
