Bull fighting games held in Southern districts
Bull fighting games such as Manjuvirattu and Yerudhukattu were conducted in Sivagangai and Ramanthapuram districts.
Madurai
At Ramanathapuram district, Yerudhukat tu was conducted in Kanjirankudi village near Keelakarai. During the game the bull of Adhithan, district president, Yerudhukattu Federation, participated. The bull was tied with a rope at one point and was made to run throughout the ground. Several youngsters tried to tame the bull. While the game was on, policemen tried to stop it. When they tried to arrest the bull fighters people opposed but the police went ahead.Â
Adhithan firmly defied the ban, and said the bull fight would be conducted. Similarly, Manjuvirattu was conducted at a Kanmai near Siravayal in Sivagangai district. The bulls were released and chased by bull fighters. Though police protection was strengthened expecting Manjuvirattu to be carried out in Siravayal, the game was held 2 km away from the village. Initially a bull was released for Manjuvirattu in the wee hours at Siravayal much before the police anticipated it.
Jallikattu in MaduraiÂ
Similarly, in Madurai jallikattu was conducted in a few villages. At Kulamangalam village, the sport was conducted for the second consecutive day. At Pudhupatti village near Alanganallur four bulls were released in a private coconut farm by setting up a temporary enclosure gate.
