    Pongal gets sporty for children from orphanages in Coimbatore

    As many as 733 boys and girls from 17 orphanages participated in the fifth annual Pongal Sports Meet organised by the Coimbatore City Police. The event was organised at the Police Recruits School Ground with the support of the Coimbatore Athletic Association who provided referees and technical assistance.

    A total of 44 sports and games were organised for the children in various age categories, accommodating everyone from tiny tots to college students. Pickup and drop was provided to the children in police vehicles, in addition to lunch and refreshments. Prizes, medals and certificates were given away to the winners of the first three places in each event. The home from which children won the most number of medals was given a trophy. 

    The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) S Lakshmi presided over the valedictory function and gave away the prizes. A senior police officer said they were involved in various activities to extend their helping hand to children of orphanages in the city through their ‘Kaavalar Kaakum Karangal’ initiative. In the year 2013, the then Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravesh Kumar mooted the idea behind the sports and games for children of orphanages and it is being conducted as an annual event since then.
