Lankan Navy detains 10 fishermen

Sources said, around 900 fishermen of Jegathappattiam of the Pudukkottai district ventured into sea by 270 mechanised boats on Wednesday morning. Except for two all the boats reached the shore on Thursday. The functionaries of Jegathappattinam fishermen association started a search operation to trace the two boats and the crew of ten fishermen. 

Meanwhile, they were told by their counterparts in Sri Lanka that the fishermen of Jegathappattinam were arrested by a patrol team of Sri Lankan Coast Guard with the help of Sri Lankan Navy when they were fishing at Northwest of Delft island near Neduntheevu in Sri Lankan water. The arrested fishermen and the boats were taken to Karainagar. 

They have been identified as Manikandan (19), Rajendran (21), Mani (50), Kaliyamoorthi (20), Prabu (15), who ventured into sea by boat (IND TN 06 MM 385) owned to S Muthukumaran of Jegathappattinam. Govindhan (50), Guna (40), Karthick (20), Suthan (21) and Azhagesan (19), ventured in the boat (INDTN 06MM 758) owned by K Vijayendran. 

The arrested fishermen and their two boats were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Jaffna, according to Sri Lankan Navy website.
