    Officials upset over death of three animals

    A leopard was found dead in a tea estate at Kilkotagiri in the Solurmattam section of Nilgiris North Forest Division on January 3. The one-year-old female was spotted by the estate labourers.

    Forest personnel who visited the place said that there was no external injury on the animal and that an autopsy was performed on its carcass on Wednesday. The reason for its sudden death was not known. Samples of the vital organs were collected and sent for laboratory analysis to ascertain the cause of its death. A 20-year-old tusker was found dead in the Sathyamangalam forest range in Erode district on Wednesday. 
    Forest department staff spotted the carcass in the Anaikkarai area. Department officials confirmed that it suffered from worms in the intestine and suspected that it could have stopped eating due to this and died. An autopsy was performed and the carcass was buried after removing its tusks. 
    On Tuesday night, a spotted deer was killed on the Karumathampatti to Somanur Road at the outskirts of the city in Coimbatore district. It is learnt that the animal was crossing the road when a speeding two-wheeler knocked it down near Karumathampatti four roads junction. Three men riding the bike were also injured in the accident and are being treated in government hospital.

    Shortage of water had forced wild animals to enter human habitation. At villages present at the foothills of Kodaikanal hills a leopard had strayed and the villagers feel threatened 
    Subbiah, a farmer from Koothampatti village in Dindigul district, while staying in his farm, on Monday night, noticed his dogs barking constantly. Though he searched the farm immediately he did not see anything unusual. Then on Tuesday evening he saw a leopard walking in the farm and vacated the farm soon. He hastily informed the forest department. Based on his information officials began a search for the animal and found its foot marks near the Akkikulam Kanmai. 
    Following that four teams of forest officials were formed. They searched the entire region thoroughly. They also made public announcements to the villages near Sempatti to remain careful and not to venture out at nights. They warned them to keep the cattle and other farm animals safe.
