    New Bascule bridge to replace old one at Pamban

    A new Bascule bridge, a movable bridge that facilitates movement of boats by lifting the span, would be constructed at Pamban Railway Bridge at the cost of Rs 40 crore said Suyambulingam, Chief Engineer, Southern Railway at Rameswaram.

    Speaking to media, he said that Railways had sanctioned to construct a movable bridge at the to replace the existing bridge.  Engineers from England would be involved in constructing the 100 tonnes bridge. The work will begin in March and would be completed by 15 days. Trains would stop at Mandapam on those days, he said. He also said that the bridge would be operated electrically and the lifting time would be three minutes and the closing time would be just 2 minutes. CCTV cameras would also be fixed in the movable bridge, added the Chief Engineer.
