On December 22 night, a special team of Deputy Police Commissioner of Madurai raided a star hotel at Bye Pass road at Madurai and secured the trio. The trio was taken to the Karimedu station.

During the interrogation, sources said that they confessed to have cheated Lakshmanaraja, a business man based at Kappalur near Madurai, of Rs 2 crore by getting his land document and not repaying the money. A case was booked by the Karimedu police and they are in search of another person who is also linked to the case. But sources close to police claimed that the gang had cheated the businessman of selling Iridium, a rare and costly metal.

The gang had approached the businessman and had informed him that a person known to them is possessing Iridium worth Rs.20 crore and they are ready to sell the metal for just Rs.2 crore. Further one of the accused Vinoth Kumar had claimed that he was close to several politicians in the ruling party. and was even wearing the AIADMK dhoti. The businessman had trusted Vinoth and had given them the money. But the gang absconded and did not give the Iridium as promised. He tried contacting them but the gang did not respond.

It was then the businessman realised that he had been cheated. He had secretly informed higher police officials about the incident and the top officials had formed a team. They carried out investigation and raided the hotel. During the raid Vinoth had informed the police that he knew a influential person in AIADMK and would even speak to the person directly.  But the police arrested them. Still the kingpin of the gang is absconding and only if he is arrested further information in the case would be revealed, added the sources.
