Jayalalithaa’s last project - ambulance for animals a hit in rural Tamil Nadu
The animal mobile ambulance service 1962 - the last project that was launched by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, has become a hit among the rural people for its emergency care for livestock.

The ambulance has rescued as many as 12 animals in distress. It has also undertaken oestrus synchronisation protocol (attending pregnancy issues) to 150 cows and has targeted to undertake over 1500 goats.
Similar to the 108 ambulance, the 1962 emergency service for livestock was inaugurated by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on September 21 as a pilot project in Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Namakkal, Madurai and Kanchipuram. Each district was given two ambulances at a cost of Rs 6.33 crore. Under the National Agriculture Development Project (NADP), two animal medical mobile ambulances have become operational with the help of the Veterinary University Training and Research Centre (VUTRC) under the nodal agency of directorate of clinics has set up the establishment in these districts. The ambulances have a veterinarian, assistant and a driver.
Fully equipped
According to the Professor and Head of the VUTRC, Tiruchy Dr P N Richard Jagatheesan, the service is used to address trauma, accident, poisonous plants and other issues such as birth prolapse, dystocia and also common diseases. The ambulances have a hydraulic lift to carry the animals. They are also equipped with oxygen kits, generators and a mobile scanning machine. “The ambulances get steady calls from Thottiyam, Musiri and Lalgudi regions”, Richard said. Meanwhile, the 1962 facility has addressed oestrus synchronization protocol for at least 150 cows so far and 1500 goats will be given free treatment during pregnancy in rural areas, Richard added.
