Cash for tea estate workers from December 22
Banks will be taking money to tea estates in Valparai and disbursing money to workers to give them a sigh of relief from the cash crunch. On December 21 representatives of State Bank of India, Indian Bank and Union Bank met the estate owners, representatives of labour unions and other stake holders and held discussions.

District Lead Bank Manager for Coimbatore District A. Kanagaraj said that they have handed over a chart according to which the banks will go to each major estate to disburse cash. “Of the 35 estates, more than half of them are major ones with over 1,500 labourers. Labourers in each estate have accounts with all the banks,” he said. He told DT Next that the banks would be collectively disbursing cash to 700 to 800 persons a day. This will go on till January 15 (excluding government holidays and bank holidays) as they have to cover close to 30,000 labourers who are living as far as 40 km from Valparai tsown. “To give labourers in all estates equal opportunity to withdraw money, the banks will go to the estates on a rotation basis,” he said. “Bank employees will be in the estate from 12 pm to 3 30 pm,” he said. They have fixed minimum withdrawal limit at Rs. 1,000 and thereafter as Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 4,000 (maximum).
