According to officials, the Andhra Pradesh government stopped the release of Krishna water three day back after cyclone Vardah made landfall. Since then water is being released to Red Hills from Poondi reservoir and the storage is gradually declining.

“We have again approached our Andhra Pradesh counterparts and they have also shown a green signal for releasing more water. We are also hopeful that the AP officials would increase the quantum of water,” said a senior engineer. Another engineer said that the storage level at the reservoir was at minimum against its maximum capacity of 35 feet.

“Water to Red Hills lake was released through baby canal. Since the level is considerably low, water is not being released through link canal,” he added. In the wake of poor rains, the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department officials had already approached AP irrigation department to release 1.5 tmc of water from Kandaleru reservoir, as per the pact. It may be noted that the Andhra Pradesh government had so far released 0.860 tmc of water. They have assured that the balance quantum would be released in the coming days.
