Following the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who was also the former General Secretary of AIADMK, there was a void in the party. To fill it, senior AIADMK leaders and Ministers had been demanding Sasikala to become the General Secretary of the party. However, the cadre at the ground level who were not happy with the elevation of Sasikala were involved in defacing the posters which contained her photos. Such incidents have been reported earlier in the central districts and it has now been happening in Madurai too. Three posters put up by the AIADMK Madurai rural wing near Mattuthavani bus stand were found to be defaced. In all the three only the face of Sasikala was found removed. As the identity of the miscreants could not be confirmed, the party cadre removed the posters immediately.  Meanwhile, at Kovilpatti, AIADMK functionaries met and passed a resolution in favour of Sasikala being selected for the post of party general secretary.

Jayalalithaa Peravai, a wing of the ruling AIADMK, urged VK Sasikala, aide of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, to take over the mantle of party General Secretary, contest in bypoll and become Chief Minister.
