Repair works undertaken on Pamban road bridge
Repair works are being undertaken in full-fledged manner at the Pamban Road bridge in Rameswaram after the iron couplings ejected out of the bridge recently.

Recently the iron screws holding the iron couplings in the bridge loosened and got ejected from the iron couplings. Following the problem, traffic was regulated in one way and owing to it there were traffic problems particularly in the weekend. Even there was an accident at Pamban road bridge in the night recently. Following the displacement of iron couplings, the repair works are undertaken in the bridge. As the bridge is 30 years old, the screws are being changed and the iron couplings are being given a new shape by mending them. Some of the iron couplings which had been broken are also replaced. Earlier the cracks that developed in the bridge were repaired. The work is expected to be finished by Saturday.Â
Pamban bridge is India’s first sea bridge. The Pamban road bridge is one of the longest road bridges in India which was constructed to connect Rameswaram island with the mainland. It is an engineering marvel that evokes awe! Apart from the road bridge, the only other means to connect with the island is the train service. Few can forget a train journey on the Pamban bridge. With 143 piers, spanning 2 km between the mainland and the island, it is the second longest sea bridge in India now, after the 2-3 km Bandra-Worli sea link on Mumbai’s western coast. has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through.
