LIVERPOOL: Liverpool maintained its new-found momentum as Darwin Nunez scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League while Tottenham Hotspur suffered a reality check with a 0-2 loss at Manchester United on Wednesday.

Chelsea’s run of four successive league wins came to an end as it was held to a 0-0 draw at Brentford. An impressive Newcastle United bolstered its place in the top-six with a 1-0 victory at home to struggling Everton.

Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Manchester City looked like lift-off for its stuttering season, but it was made to work extra hard by West Ham. In the end, it was thankful for summer signing Nunez’s first Anfield goal for the club, a superb downward header in the 22nd minute from a cross by Kostas Tsimikas.

After a difficult start, United is slowly taking shape under Erik ten Hag.

But for a clutch of superb saves by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, United would have won by more. United rained in 18 shots on the Tottenham goal in the first half without scoring, but eventually went in front when Fred’s side-footed strike deflected past Lloris in the 47th minute.

The ‘Red Devils’ kept up the pressure and put the match to bed in the 69th minute when Bruno Fernandes powered a strike into the net after an excellent flowing move.

RESULTS: Liverpool 1 (D Nunez 22) bt West Ham United 0; Manchester United 2 (Fred 47, B Fernandes 69) bt Tottenham Hotspur 0; Brentford 0 drew with Chelsea 0; Newcastle United 1 (M Almiron 30) bt Everton 0

Comfortable win for Real

Federico Valverde, Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio scored to hand Real Madrid a comfortable 3-0 win at bottom side Elche in La Liga on Wednesday.

In-form Valverde gave Real the lead in the 11th minute with a brilliant technical strike from the edge of the area. Benzema extended Real’s lead in the 75th minute after neat interplay with Rodrygo, who assisted the Ballon D’Or winner with a clever back-heel pass. Substitute Asensio added the third goal one minute from time, firing home a close-range finish from Rodrygo’s cross.

RESULT: Real Madrid 3 (F Valverde 11, K Benzema 75, M Asensio 89) bt Elche 0
