Dhawan raring to perform in play-offs
Bracing for the Indian Premier League (IPL) Qualifier 1 in Dubai on Thursday, Delhi Capitals (DC) opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan isn’t bothered about the rampaging form of the Mumbai Indians (MI) pace-bowling pairing of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.

In fact, the southpaw, who will come up against the deadly duo in the powerplay overs, is optimistic about weathering the new-ball storm. While Dhawan has 525 runs in his kitty, Bumrah and Boult have picked up 23 and 20 wickets respectively this season.
“At the moment, I am just relaxing and keeping myself fresh for the game. I have seen them plenty of times and watched their videos. I know their plans, there is nothing new. I will go out there, perform and win the match for our team,” said Dhawan during a virtual press conference on the eve of the play-off fixture, adding that he is delighted with his own form.
“I have scored around 500 runs each in the last four years. This season, I have two centuries as well as two ducks, something which has never happened before. I am happy that I am performing consistently and providing good starts.” Dhawan emphasised that DC would have to be on top of its game if it is to topple four-time champion Mumbai, a side known for excelling at the final stages of IPL.
“I don’t think that MI has the upper hand. We are a strong team which can beat anyone. But for that, we will have to play good cricket in all three departments. We have to be clear with our plans and execute them well. If we manage to do that, we will certainly win,” he added.
In Delhi’s last league match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), half-centurions Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane propelled the side to victory, putting a full stop to the losing streak. The 34-year-old Dhawan stated that the presence of Rahane in the middle-order allows him to play his natural game from the word go.
“Rahane brings a lot of stability to the batting unit. Against Bangalore, he played an amazing knock. When there is a player of his experience, it gives me the freedom to take the match away from the opposition,” he explained.
