England pacers clean up West Indies top-order

After bowling the host out for 369, the Windies lost wickets at regular intervals. The trio of Broad, Anderson and Archer -- playing together for the first time in this series -- kept asking questions with its probing line and pace.

Opener Kraigg Brathwaite (1) was the first to go as he nicked a Broad off-stump channel delivery to Joe Root at slips. John Campbell (32) made a meal of Archer’s bouncer for Rory Burns to take an easy catch at gully. Shai Hope (17), looking to get back among runs, had no answer to a perfect Anderson delivery, which kissed the bat and flew to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

At the break, Shamarh Brooks (4 batting) and Roston Chase (0 batting) were at the crease. Earlier, Broad poured cold water on Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach’s good work with a quick-fire half century as England made 369 runs at Lunch.

Resuming at 258 for four, Gabriel (2/77) castled Ollie Pope for his overnight score of 91. The fast bowler then removed fellow overnight batter Jos Buttler (67), who edged a length ball to West Indies captain Jason Holder at second slip.

In between the two dismissals, all-rounder Chris Woakes (1) chopped a Roach delivery onto his stumps as the West Indies pace spearhead celebrated his 200th Test wicket. Roach finished with best figures of four wickets for 72 runs.

Archer was taken by Holder off Roach at second slip as England was reduced to 280 for eight. Veteran Broad later swung the willow from ball one to bring up his 50 off 33 balls.

The southpaw finally got out for 62 runs from just 45 balls to turn the tide in the host’s favour.

West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach on Saturday joined an elite list of cricketers when he picked up his 200th Test wicket in the ongoing Test match against England here.

All-rounder Chris Woakes was Roach’s 200th victim in the format as he became the ninth bowler from the West Indies to achieve the feat. Roach is also the first bowler after Curtly Ambrose to grab 200 Test wickets. Ambrose, who had got to the landmark in 1994, had a special message for Roach after he joined the 200 club, urging him to aim for 250 and then 300 wickets from here on. “Want to say congratulations to him for joining the 200 club. From Curtly Ambrose to you Kemar, ‘the next step is 250 and then 300. Remember I tell you that’,” Ambrose said in a video message posted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on social media. Roach got to the landmark in his 59th Test, at an average of just above 27. Courtney Walsh leads the pack for the Windies with 519 wickets from 132 Tests. He is followed by Ambrose (405), Malcom Marshall (376), Lance Gibbs (309), Joel Garner (259), Michael Holding (249), Garry Sobers (235) and Andy Roberts (202), with Roach being the latest to enter the 200 club.
