Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) senior manager J Mercy Regina said a high performance centre for women players is being planned. She added more athletes would start getting jobs in Tamil Nadu through the 3% sports quota scheme.

FIVB Level 1 coach K Anantha Kumar opined written exams must be scrapped in state police sports quota recruitment. “Exams aren’t necessary for sports quota. The state association must work properly to take the game forward,” said Anantha.

Concurring with Regina’s point, former India player Meena Mahalingam said private companies should also be approached for jobs. “We can’t rely on government jobs alone. Employment in private sector is crucial for the development of the sport,” said Meena.

M Sunitha, also a former international player, felt participation must be encouraged at the grassroots level rather than looking at performances. “Playing volleyball must be made a fun activity in schools. It is important to broaden the base,” she stated.

VK Omprakash, another FIVB Level 1 coach, said training should be made fun across the board. “For example, zumba dance can become a part of the fitness regimen. Regular clinics must be conducted across the state to upgrade coaches’ knowledge. SDAT can organise exclusive coaching courses for physical education teachers.”

Former India international R Gayathri called for more tournaments in the state. “The facilities (in Tamil Nadu) are better now and players should make use of it,” she said.
