132 players get picked up in TNPL season 5 draft
Salem Spartans (the then Tuti Patriots) made full use of its first position in the order to pick a strong squad at the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2020 Player Draft, in which a total of 132 players were snapped up.

Salem not only acquired established all-rounder Vijay Shankar but also picked up Ganeshan Periyasamy, the slinging pace bowler who was the highest wicket-taker in TNPL 2019. Leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin, who represented holder Chepauk Super Gillies in Season 4, will also turn out for Spartans this time around.
It is to be noted that the franchise retained Washington Sundar ahead of this season’s Player Draft. “It is a great boost to have Vijay Shankar in our side.
It is a new set-up and we are looking to do better this year,” said Sundar. India international Vijay Shankar, on his part, said he is looking forward to playing a full TNPL season.
The draft featured 17 rounds but VB Kanchi Veerans did not go beyond 15. Lyca Kovai Kings and Siechem Madurai Panthers opted out after 16 rounds. In the end, Veerans had 18 players in the squad while Kovai and Madurai had 19 each.
The rest five participating franchises finished with 20 players each. Of the 132 players who were chosen by the franchises, 67 are from the districts.
Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) president Rupa Gurunath, who attended the draft, revealed all sides can add two outstation players, for whom a separate draft will be held in May.
“The draft for the outstation players will be held after the Indian Premier League 2020,” said Rupa, TNCA’s first woman president.
