Skipper Maninder Singh (18 points) was in top form as Bengal notched up its 10th victory in the competition. It currently sits second on the table with 63 points after 17 fixtures. Haryana is one spot behind with 54 points from 16 fixtures. Vinay (14 points) did bag a good haul, but couldn’t get a positive result single-handedly for Steelers, which was without its regular skipper Dharmaraj Cheralathan.

Bengal dominated the first half, with its raiding trio of Maninder, K Prapanjan and Mohammad Nabibakhsh picking points with ease. Bengal’s dominance wasn’t limited to its raids though as its aggressive approach in defence paid rich dividends. Steelers’ star raider Vikas Kandola suffered five tackles in the opening period as he struggled to break free from an in-form Bengal defence led by Baldev Singh.

Warriors inflicted two all-outs in the first half (7th and 13th minutes) to open up a huge 15-point lead. Vinay was the lone fighter for Steelers and his raids ensured the Haryana side stayed within an outside chance of coming back into the match. At half-time, Bengal had a 16-point cushion at 30-14.

Vinay’s three-point ‘Super Raid’ in the 23rd minute was followed by a four-point raid from Vikas Kandola. Those twin raids secured Steelers a vital all-out in the fifth minute of the second half. But the Warriors defenders steadied the ship once again, with Baldev picking up his ‘High 5’ in the 31st minute.

Vikas Kandola and Vinay kept picking up points for Steelers, but Prapanjan’s consistency in his raids, including a two-point effort with under four minutes left on the clock, meant the Haryana side couldn’t inflict another all-out it badly wanted. Steelers’ loss exposed the lack of depth in the defence and coach Rakesh Kumar will be looking to quickly address the issue to prevent negative results in the most crucial part of the season.

On the last day of the Pune leg, Telugu Titans will square off against Patna Pirates, while Puneri Paltan will host defending champion Bengaluru Bulls.
