TNPL: Kanchi into play-offs with 7-wicket win over Trichy
VB Kanchi Veerans qualified for the Sankar Cement Tamil Nadu Premier League Season 4 play-offs by defeating Ruby Trichy Warriors at the ICL Sankar Nagar Ground here on Friday.
Thirunelveli
A great bowling performance and a captain’s knock from Baba Aparajith (50 not out) guided Kanchi to a seven-wicket success over Trichy. Courtesy the result, Veerans (after Dindigul Dragons, Chepauk Super Gillies and Siechem Madurai Panthers) took the final spot in the last four stage of the competition.
Lyca Kovai Kings for the first time failed to secure a play-off berth because of its inferior net run rate. Kanchi had a NRR of +0.552, while Kovai’s was +0.255. Veerans will lock horns with defending champion Madurai in the Eliminator on Sunday. Chasing a modest 122 for victory on Friday, Kanchi scampered to the target with just five balls to spare.
Though it lost only three wickets in the chase, it never bossed the proceedings while batting. Aparajith and Sanjay Yadav shared an unbroken 40-run stand for the fourth wicket to take their team across the line. The skipper’s match-winning innings included four sixes and a solitary boundary. Opener Suresh Lokeshwar (40) played a patient knock, not allowing Trichy to make inroads at regular intervals.
Earlier, Kanchi bowlers were up to the task as they restricted Warriors to juts 121 for seven. Adithya Ganesh (43) and K Mukunth (32) were the only batters who made meaningful contributions. Four Kanchi bowlers took a wicket each.
Brief scores: Ruby Trichy Warriors 121 for 7 in 20 overs (Adithya Ganesh 43, Aushik Srinivas 1/12) vs VB Kanchi Veerans 122 for 3 in 19.1 overs (Baba Aparajith 50*, Suresh Lokeshwar 40).
